RMS  “WINDSOR CASTLE”

Built by Cammell Laird Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, Birkenhead for the Union Castle Mail Steamship Company Limited, London,37,640 grt  783 feet length overall, 93 feet breadth, powered by  Pametrada  Steam Turbines powering twin propellers producing 49,000 shaft horsepower.
Passengers 782 and crew of 475,she became yard number 1287,her keel being laid ceremoniously on no.6 slipway South Yard on 9th December 1957.Launched 23rd June 1959 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at 13:30 hrs.
Her trials took place in June 1960 achieving speed of 24.803 knots being handed over to her owners on 7th July 1960.Her maiden voyage was from Southampton to Cape Town on18th August 1960,and served the route for seventeen years making her final departure from Cape Town on 6th September 1977.
She was sold to John S.Latsis of Athens,Greece in October 1977 and converted into a luxury floating hotel at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia renamed “Margarita L”.
Laid up at Piraeus,Greece from 1998 until 2005,she was renamed “Rita” and subsequently made the final voyage to breakers at Alang, India under her own steam arriving in April 2005.
