PW1306 HMS Opossum
HMS OPOSSUM
Diesel Electric "Oberon"Class Submarine,built by Cammell Laird & Co(Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd,Birkenhead.

This boat was the third of four Oberon class submarines built at Birkenhead for the British Admiralty becomig yard No.1306.
Her keel was laid 21st December 1961 on slipway No.2 south yard and was launched 23rd May 1963 by Mrs A.R.Hezlet wife of Vice Admiral A.R.Hezlett CB.DSO,DSC,Flag Officer Scotland.
She undertook trials in the Clyde on 11th April 1964 and was commmissioned on 19th June 1964 at the shipyard, later revisiting the yard in May 1966.She had a successful career, giving 29 years service, and became the last "Oberon" in commission with the Royal Navy when she paid off on 3rd September 1993.

This submarine holds particular memories for the artist, since when accompanied by my father in April 1963 upon paying a visit to the yard, this was the very first ship I witnessed under construction at Lairds, and,at the age of nine, this together with the magnitide of the yard and all that was taking place within it,made a lifelong impression on me.

The submarine is depicted on her trials on the Firth of Clyde.
